RFID Moves Forward in Construction
RFID or Radio Frequency Identification is the use of radio frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data. Its purpose is to identify and track tags attached to objects, as well as animals. RF Controls, the makers of the Intelligent Tracking and Control System and hardware conglomerate,Stanley Black and Decker, have merged their companies and resources to create View Technologies. This merger may allow RFID to have a significant impact on the construction industry.
According to Constructech, Stanley Black and Decker is providing manufacturing, sales, marketing, installation, software and administrative services through its industrial and automotive repair division. RF Controls is providing ongoing scientific development and a global license to its suite of fixed antenna systems. Combined, the joint venture will provide a suite of software products that will offer a visual representation of tagged items and interface into a customer’s legacy ERP (enterprise-resource planning and POS (point of sale) systems. The RFID would help the user count, track and monitor the assets at a jobsite. When the technologies are combined, they will make these tasks simpler as well as integrate user data with existing backend systems.
According to ThingMagic, makers of the embedded RFID reader, only three months after going-live, a California general contractor was blown away by the system benefits and the richness of the collected data of the RFID.
