Regulations move BIM forward in United Kingdom

There has been wide discussions in last few months about the repercussions of regulations on Building Information Modelling or BIM, i various countries. One of the first counties that took necessary early steps to implement the regulations tied to the use of Building information modelling on various government projects was the United Kingdom. Currently, one governmental organization is implementing the new technology to drive BIM in forward direction.

In March 2013, PAS 1192-2, was launched in the United Kingdom, which happens to be a specification for the purpose of information management for the delivery/capital stage of the construction projects, as a part of the construction strategy of British government. The primary aim of the strategy is to reduce the overhead of public sector assets by almost 20-30%.

Regulations move BIM forward in United Kingdom

In an effort to meet this specification, during June, a Viewpoint Construction Software (www.viewpoints.com), and Portland Ore, revealed that the United Kingdom’s MOJ (Ministry of Justice) has elected 4projects (www.4projects.com) and 4BIM Model server to achieve Level Two BIM across all the developmental tasks in the future. As defined by the BIM Task Group (www.bimtaskgroup.org) London, England, Level 2 BIM happens to be a series of DOM (Domain specific models) (e.g.: architectural, services, structural etc) with the idea of a single ecosystem to store the shared data and information. By 2016, it would be required by the construction groups to prove Level Two BIM for the purpose of winning contracts from the government. The primary instinct behind the mandatory Level Two BIM is the acknowledgement of one of the government objective that is all about delivering the projects promptly and on budget, which turns out to be the mantra of almost all the successful construction projects.
