Threatened by mining: An Entire Arctic Town is Relocating

An entire Arctic town that was threatened by mining is planned to be relocated. These plans are now in next phase and are expected to bring in front the new talent for this work to be done.

Kiruna is the Northern most towns in Sweden with an estimated population of less than 20,000 but in terms of area, it is one of the biggest municipalities in world. Vast seam if iron ore is being mined in the area. Due to this reason, this town has a threat to get sunk. It is said that the same iron ore due to which the area has got a revolution and which made the area richer is now a threat to that area.

The relocation plan of Kiruna town is now going in the operational phase. This town is again looking towards reinvention and growth. Relocation project of Kiruna and the mining process in the town requires a large number of widely skilled labor.

The town of Kiruna is located to the north of Arctic circle by 140 km. It experiences a challenging sub arctic climate. Interesting thing about this town is, the sun never sets in summer and never rises in winter.

A mining company known as LKAB was founded in Kiruna in 1900. It is now the largest mining company in Europe. White Architects of Stockholm have been allotted with this relocation project in 2013. With this plan it is expected that the city will relive with preserving its environment, culture, society and economics.
