Deep Beams as the name suggests, is a beam with a large depth to thickness ratio and a maximum shear span-depth ratio, typically, 2.5 for the concentrated loads and 5.0 for loads that are distributed over the material.
Deep beams are structural components which carry a large portion of the loads to the supports through compression by combining the load force along with the reaction force. The distribution of strain is no longer linear as in the case of simple beams, and shear deformations become more significant.
Deep Beams are typically used in tall buildings and for providing greater structural load bearing capability for foundations. But do note that, their information is not explicitly stated in many codes of practices.
The spreadsheet typically contains various parameters which are fed as input data. They includes:
- Concrete Strength
- Rebar Yield Stress
- Factored Shear Load
- Factored Moment Load
- Width
- Effective Depth
- Span
The values of the same are calculated and mentioned in their respective units. Apart from these, the reinforcement values are also calculated both in the horizontal and vertical direction.

Deep Beam Templates for the Excel Sheet
You do not need to bother creating the excel sheet from scratch, plenty of templates for different types of Deep Beams and their intended applications are available online for ready usage. The proper usage of the excel spreadsheet will help build a formidable structure and also aid in optimization at later stages and cost estimations.
